Taking photos with young children can feel like a real challenge. The good news is, it\u2019s absolutely possible! With a bit of preparation and the right mindset, you can create beautiful memories together. Here are five tips to help you make the most of your family photo session.<\/p>\n

Do a little preparation<\/h4>\n

A bit of preparation can make a big difference, especially with children between two and four years old. Talk about the session in a positive and exciting way a couple of weeks in advance. Explain what will happen and what you\u2019ll be doing together. You can even count down the days or practise a few fun poses as a family. It won\u2019t guarantee that your child won\u2019t feel shy, but it will help them feel more comfortable and familiar with the experience.<\/p>\n

Come rested and ready<\/h4>\n

To set everyone up for success, we want your child to be in the best possible mood. Try to avoid planning anything too stimulating before your session. Activities like hiking, swimming all day or attending a birthday party can be quite tiring. Instead, plan a calm day at home, allow time for a good nap and make sure everyone has eaten well beforehand. A rested child with a full belly is much more likely to enjoy the experience.<\/p>\n

Let go of expectations<\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s be honest, sessions with young children rarely go exactly as planned. That doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t successful! If your child wants to run around, we can turn it into a game and capture those moments as you scoop them up in your arms. If they prefer hiding behind a tree, we can play along and create beautiful, candid memories. The key is to stay flexible, go with the flow and embrace the unexpected.<\/p>\n

Bring something to keep them engaged<\/h4>\n

Young children usually have a short attention span. Being in front of the camera for an extended period can quickly feel repetitive for them. Bringing something that captures their interest can make a big difference. For babies, a musical toy works wonderfully. For older children, something like a balance bike can be a great option. You can even let them choose what to bring so they feel more involved.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget snacks and water as well. A quick snack break can do wonders for everyone\u2019s mood.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be afraid to be a little silly<\/h4>\n

Despite all the preparation, some children may still be more reserved. That\u2019s when we bring out the fun. Tickle fights, singing games or silly face contests can help break the ice.<\/p>\n

And if needed, I have a few secret tricks up my sleeves, including kid-approved humour: fart jokes. Yes, it might feel a bit silly to joke about \u201cWho farted?\u201d, but it works every time! These moments often lead to the most GENUINE smiles and laughter.<\/p>\n
