You’ve recently found out you’re expecting a little one? Congratulations! With so many changes ahead, there’s a lot to think about. One important thing not to forget is capturing this beautiful chapter of your life. To help you, here are five tips to make the most of your maternity session.
Don’t wait until the last minute!
A maternity session is ideally done between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. In some cases, such as more difficult or multiple pregnancies, it can be scheduled earlier. That’s why it’s best to book during your second trimester to ensure availability.
Since a pregnancy is considered full term at 36 weeks, it’s not recommended to schedule your session after that point. First, your baby may arrive earlier than expected, which could mean missing the opportunity altogether. Second, the final weeks are often more tiring and physically demanding. It’s rarely too early to book, but it can definitely be too late!
Share your vision with your photographer
Do you imagine your session at home or outdoors during golden hour? Would you like to be photographed alone, with your partner, your children or even your pets? Is there a meaningful story behind your pregnancy that you would like to honour, such as a long journey to conceive or a rainbow baby?
Sharing what matters most to you allows me to create images that truly reflect your story. It also helps me suggest ideas and locations that match your vision.
You deserve to be pampered
Between the physical and hormonal changes, the past few months have likely been quite demanding. This session is the perfect opportunity to slow down and take some time for yourself.
Treat it as a little self-care moment before our shoot. Style your hair in a way that makes you feel confident, wear makeup that highlights your features and choose outfits that make you feel beautiful. Ideally, go for something comfortable that shows your baby bump while still allowing you to move and relax easily. When you feel good, it shows naturally in your photos.
Choose an easily accessible location
As your pregnancy progresses, walking can become more tiring. That’s why I always recommend choosing a location that is easy to access and comfortable for you.
For outdoor sessions, it’s best to select a spot with several beautiful areas within a short walking distance. For example, we can start in one area, take a few photos, then move on to another nearby spot. This helps keep the session relaxed and prevents unnecessary fatigue.
If your pregnancy has been more difficult, an in-home lifestyle session can be a wonderful option. It allows you to be photographed in the comfort of your bedroom, nursery or living room. We can also combine both approaches, starting indoors and finishing nearby outdoors if you feel up to it. Everything is flexible and adapted to your needs.
Bring a babysitter or pet sitter with you
If children or pets are part of your maternity session, I highly recommend bringing someone you trust to help out.
Sessions can become stressful if a child becomes tired or a pet becomes restless. Having an extra person there makes everything much easier. We can start by including your children or pets in the session, and once they’ve had enough, your helper can take them to play elsewhere. This allows us to continue the session calmly and focus on couple portraits or solo maternity photos.
