Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! If you’re looking for a meaningful and memorable gift for your partner, personalized boudoir photos highlighting your best features are always a beautiful idea. Before stepping in front of the camera, here are seven tips to nail your boudoir session.
Research your style and photographer
Just like any form of photography, boudoir comes in many different styles. Some photographers create soft and romantic images that feel timeless and elegant, while others lean toward a more sensual or bold approach. Take the time to explore different portfolios to find a style that resonates with you and reflects what you want to express.
My approach to boudoir photography focuses on creating sensual and elegant images that celebrate the female body in a tasteful and empowering way. During the session, my goal is for you to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful, regardless of your shape or size. After receiving your images, I want you to feel empowered and proud of yourself, which happens almost every time hehe! If this aligns with what you’re looking for, we’ll be a great match!
Book in advance
Some clients book their boudoir session with a specific date in mind, such as a birthday, anniversary or wedding day gift. In these cases, planning ahead is essential to ensure everything is ready on time.
As a general rule, the session should take place about two months in advance. This allows enough time for editing (around four weeks) as well as printing and production (one week for prints, up to three weeks for albums, books or canvases).
Try on your clothes and practise before the session
Our bodies naturally change over time, which means lingerie that once fit perfectly may no longer feel quite right. It’s a good idea to try everything on before your session to make sure you feel comfortable and confident.
This is also a great opportunity to practise posing in front of a mirror and discover your best angles. You can even ask a partner for feedback if that feels helpful. If you’re a visual learner, I also have a curated playlist of educative boudoir videos to guide you!
If there’s anything you’re self-conscious about, don’t hesitate to let me know before the session. This allows me to highlight your favourite features and help you feel more at ease in front of the camera.
Bring a variety of outfits
It’s best to bring several outfit options so we can create a variety of looks. This could include an oversized knit sweater, a silky robe, a partner’s shirt, a lace bodysuit and a few coordinated lingerie sets. We can start with more coverage and gradually move toward lingerie as you become more comfortable, ending with more intimate looks if you wish.
For underwear, Brazilian, bikini or high-waisted styles are often the most flattering and comfortable, as they enhance natural curves and can cover the stomach. Neutral colours such as black, white and pink also tend to photograph beautifully and remain timeless as opposed to bold colours.
Get pampered
Boudoir sessions are a special occasion, so it’s worth taking the time to pamper yourself. Schedule any beauty appointments such as hair colouring or hair removal a few days before your session to allow your skin time to recover.
If you’re working with a hair and makeup artist, or doing it yourself, it’s best to complete your look just before the session. This helps ensure everything stays fresh. You can also bring makeup for small touch-ups if needed.
While it may be tempting, it’s best to avoid self-tanning products, as they can sometimes create uneven skin tones that don’t photograph naturally. Instead, focus on hydrating your skin daily in the week leading up to your session for a healthy glow.
Stay hydrated and eat well
Taking care of your body in the days leading up to your session makes a real difference. On average, adults should drink around 2.7 litres of fluids per day, and even more during warmer months. Staying well hydrated will help you feel better and more relaxed during your shoot.
It’s also important to eat a proper meal before your appointment. Feeling nourished helps maintain your energy and comfort throughout the session.
Wear loose clothing before the appointment
Finally, try to wear loose and comfortable clothing right before your appointment. Tight bras, elastic underwear or skinny jeans can leave marks on your skin that may take time to fade, which can be visible in photos.
Choose easy-to-remove clothing such as button-up tops or zip-up pieces. This also helps avoid disturbing your hair and makeup when changing outfits.
